Quick Review of Birds of Prey: The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn… or Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

Saw it last night on Valentine’s Day with the girlfriend. Thought it was great, although the numerous and lengthy titles kind of summed up the primary issue with the film itself. At its heart, this was a Harley Quinn movie. I would say it was about 60% Harley Quinn movie, 40% Birds of Prey movie.

Not that I’m saying it is a bad thing. It worked pretty well with this dynamic. Harley kind of filled the Batgirl/Oracle role in forming the team, bringing them together–albeit not in the same sustained role. Possibly that connection will be established in the Batgirl movie that might be coming someday? I do hope this will lead into a Birds of Prey movie that gets more into the connections and storylines that Huntress, Renee Montoya and Black Canary have had over the years. Maybe get into Montoya’s time as the Question? Or Cassandra Cain becoming a super ninja assassin? Or the various Huntress and Black Canary storylines–it could be interesting to see a Crisis on Infinite Earth storyline where she meets the Earth 2 Huntress that’s Batman’s daughter…

Overall, solid movie, laid a lot of groundwork for future movies.
